REFLECTION
When I think of Legacy, I think of 2 things… Obviously in order to be successful in USANA, you have to build a legacy and a line of succession or else you will never get that residual income. The second type of legacy to me is even more important and that is the legacy I leave when I depart from this earth. My goal and purpose in life is to play a positive role in as many people’s lives as possible. When I pass away, how will I have contributed to society? How will my kids turn out? Will my kids carry on my vision and touch others. That is legacy and something that I ask myself everyday. That question and my legacy keeps me going.

APPLICATION
Success in USANA is all about legacy. That is why you must work on yourself everyday. As you improve, you can teach others and extend the line of succession. Recently my top leaders in USA (John Goerlitz and Kim Koller) have been traveling and teaching their upcoming leaders the same success habits that I had taught John and Kim 1 – 2 years back. It is very fulfilling for me to see them help others just like the way I helped them. I have succeeded in passing on my legacy. The challenge now is to create more John and Kims and duplicate myself more and also to help John and Kim create their own legacy.

ACTION STEPS
Continue to work with the next generation of upcoming leaders. I have many people throughout the world that have potential to be the next Gold director.

REFLECTION
This law is what mlm is about. I once learned that mlm is about building a “Leadership Factory.” As you develop and grow your leaders, your business will grow. And once you develop them, you will get exponential growth. It took me 18 months to reach 100 people in my organization… in June 2007, in that 1 month alone, my business increased by over 180 associates! 180 in only 4 weeks! The reason? Because my leaders that I had worked to developed sprouted and exploded! As a result, I became a Ruby Director.

APPLICATION
It was interesting to read about the founder of Papa John’s. He said that in his first few years, he lost many potential leaders cause he had to first work on developing himself. The same applies to our USANA business. We first have to grow and develop ourselves before we can lead and develop our leaders. In USANA, we constantly have to focus on self development and then to teach our leaders what we learned.

ACTION STEP
Take time to access my top 12 leaders and their current situation right now. Find out their needs and struggles and how I can help them get to next level.

REFLECTIONS
Timing is everything. I have learned this the hard way both in my social and personal life and also in my USANA business. When I was younger, I would do things straight from the textbook. I was not perceptive and didn’t learn how to read the situations well. After mistakes and failures, I have learned that ONLY the right action at the right time will lead to success.

I felt that this chart by Maxwell was very helpful.

1) Wrong Action in Wrong Time = Disaster
2) Right Action in Wrong Time = Resistance
3) Wrong Action in Right Time = Mistake
4) Right Action in Right Time = Success

When I was younger, I would often do the Right Action in the Wrong Time and that led to many frustrations. Today, I have learned to read the situations much better and adjust accordingly.

APPLICATION
In USANA, I have to be aware of what the situation is right now. What are the challenges my team members are facing? Is it the appropriate time to push them? To give them an incentive? To be harsher and tougher on them? Before I make any decisions, I have to first “Be Interested” and read the situation. It is only after I have a good understanding of the situation that I can take the correct and appropriate action

ACTION STEPS
it is almost time for me to do my quarterly assessment of my business and where my leaders are at. That will allow me to decide what action steps are necessary for the 2Q of 2009 and 2010. I have to reflect and go back to my VISION and see how things are going

REFLECTIONS
There is a common misconception that leadership is a privilege. Many people believe that once you become a leader, you just sit back and order people what to do and if things don’t work out the way they are planned, then it is the people’s fault. Nothing is further from the truth. After reading John Maxwell’s books, I can see why some businesses fail. All you have to do is look at the leaders and management. I have learned that leadership is a RESPONSIBILITY and NOT a privilege. If anything, there is more work to do as a leader than as a follower. A leader’s role is to serve his people ( as opposed to the people serving him).

APPLICATION
In USANA, my role is to serve my team. Leadership is a responsibility and my responsibility is to my team. How can I help my team grow today?

ACTION STEPS
Go over the areas where I can help serve my team and my leaders.

REFLECTION
When I started my first job, all I knew was hard work. I would stay late and do all types of things so that I could put in a 12 hour day. I was proud of that 12 hour day. But as time progressed, I realized that it wasn’t as important to work hard as to work SMART. I found myself doing a lot of things that was not going to take me anywhere. A lot of the busy and admin work was not a good use of my time. The realization of the need to work smart was a first step for me. However I still didn’t really know what it meant to work smart since regardless of what I did, I would earn my weekly paycheck at the NBA.

APPLICATION
One of the biggest challenges for the new associate in USANA is the Law of Priorities. You have to priorities and do the things that make money. In USANA, the money making activities are 1) prospecting/networking 2) marketing 3) training 4) leadership. All others make you no money. For i.e. going through your contacts and shuffling business cards make you no money. When I first started USANA, after 2 months of “working hard” and not “working smart”, I learned real quick. I learned that the only thing that mattered was prospecting. That was the biggest priority at that point in time. If I did not prospect, I would make zero $ for that week. After a few zero $ checks, I learned my lesson real quick and realized what the priorities are.

Fortunately, nowadays we have the Pocket Tracker. Pocket Tracker keeps us focused on the money making activities. Everyone should hit at least 35 – 40 points a day.

NEXT STEPS
My priorities this year is to improve my marketing (learning how to generate better leads) and my training (be a better coach and teacher.) I need to continue to lead my team and teach them. Those are the top priorities.

REFLECTION / APPLICATION
I love what Maxwell wrote. Truman had said, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”… with leadership, Maxwell puts it, “if you can’t create the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

That is so true. As leaders, we have to create the heat and create the momentum. We have to lead by example and get things going. Momentum is huge in our USANA business. When I read the chapter, I thought of 3 areas that momentum plays a big role.

1) Prospecting – it is very easy to get out of prospecting and back into a trap of doing busy work. The key to success is to use momentum wisely and give you the boost to prospect. Prospecting is so easy when you are making 1 call after another. But if you take breaks or stop, then it is hard to get going again. When you prospect, make sure you go with the flow and get in as many calls as you can during a certain time limit. Don’t take breaks to write emails, check emails, talk to downlines, etc. That breaks up the flow and it’s more difficult to get back into the prospecting mindset. Top sponsors know how to use this wisely. In a group, one of the best ways to generate momentum for your team is through calling parties. Nothing creates more excitement than a bunch of associates all taking turns to prospect.

2) Leadership / Growth – when things get going, they can really get going! It took me 18 months to reach 100 associates… and then in June 2007, due to incentives and a run for Platinum Pacesetter, I added over 180 people in just ONE MONTH! That is what happens when you have momentum

3) Duplication – back in April 2006, I was tired of where I was and decided that I had to lead by example and get things going. I decided to take massive action. Instead of relying on others, I decided to lead the ship and just go all out by myself. I knew others would see what I was doing and would follow and that was what happened. I set a goal to add 25 associates in 40 days and started to sponsor… it turned out that the momentum was so great that we ended up adding over 40 associates in 40 days and that momentum extended beyond 40 days allowed me to achieve Gold DIrector! I never really planned for my Gold run but the momentum allowed it to happen.

ACTION STEPS
Continue to generate momentum for my team. In terms of prospecting, I will be doing more live prospecting calls and calling parties. With Leadership / Growth – I am going to emphasize this more to my leaders… that they must generate momentum by leading by example. in regards to duplication, I am going to start sponsor again. As my leaders, see me sponsoring, momentum will be generated

Leaders Find a Way for the Team to Win

REFLECTION – It was pretty difficult for me to read this chapter as I hate history. And I know nothing about the ball game. Ha! Fortunately, I still got the meaning of this law. To win, one must do anything to get it. This reminded me of the story of “burn the ship”. When I first read this story few months after I joined Usana, I told my leaders I want to burn my ship. Needless to say, my leaders were worried about me. They worried that I’d get burn myself.

Now I realized that I had the Law of Victory within me but I was lack of leadership skills. I was a lone-ranger and I didn’t coach my people.

APPLICATION – A will to WIN is always in me. There is no Plan B for me. But sometimes I lost directions, and wonder what ways can I use for the team to win. Now I’ve learnt 3 important components of victory:

Unity of Vision – share Dr. Myron Wentz’s vision. Law of Buy-In: when my people like me and the vision, they will get behind both.

Diversity of skills – bring in people with different skills into the team.

Dedicated to victory and raising their potential.

REFLECTION
This law comes naturally to me because I am not a quitter. I am one of those types that will go all out and fight till the end. When I started USANA, I gave myself 5 years for the business. I told myself that I would not quit until I gave myself 5 years time to figure this business out. That focus and drive was one of my key factors to success. I realized that there would be failures and decided at that point (Nov. 2003) that I would do everything to figure this business out so that I could be successful. I would fight and go on until I reached my goal (victory) of earning over $100,000 of passive income a year.

APPLICATION
USANA is a business and we must treat it like a business. With every business, there are challenges and there are ways to overcome them. One major aspect of a business is marketing and USANA is the same. You must have marketing in order to be successful! One of the beauties of USANA is that there are so many ways to market and grow your business. It’s just a matter of finding your niche that will work for you. For me, my niche was online marketing and online advertising. I decided I was going to be a master in this field and make this my niche. There were tons of challenges and expenses but I was going to learn it and win at all costs. I had to find my niche to succeed.

Another application is my communication/sales skills. I was really pathetic and bad when I first started when it came to prospecting… but following the Law of Victory, I decided I was going to go all out and succeed in this business. If it meant reading all the sales books I could get my hands on, then I would do it. I attended tons of seminars so that I could learn and be successful. Quitting was not an option. There were also tons of challenges in running a business and even today there are tons of challenges. But what I would do is surround myself with positive people and listen to business audios and that kept me on track and gave me the motivation to keep going.

ACTION STEPS
My next “Victory” will be for me to develop 3 new Gold Directors and 1 new Ruby Director for 2009.

REFLECTION – Simon always asked “When is the best time to make a sale?” AFTER A SALE that is. The Law of the Big Mo really got me going way back in year 2008. In the mid of 2008, Usana had this PPS requalification for all existing associates. I always wanted to be a PPS. That was really a great chance. Getting started is a struggle. But after I’ve sponsored my first associate in my PPS run, I got pumped up and continued looking for the second, third and forth one. Momentum really puts victory within reach. Nearly any kind of change is possible.

APPLICATION – Realizing the important and the benefits of The law of the Big Mo, I have to start creating the momentum in my organization. It takes a leader to create the momentum. We can easily see this when our tai ko, Simon is here in Malaysia. He is the leader who creates the momentum, who motivates others. After talking to him, it seemed that IMPOSSIBLE IS REALLY NOTHING. I want to be like him too, someone who can create the momentum in the organization and motivates others.

Keep the VISION in front of every one.

Focus on what we could do rather than on what we couldn’t do.

Celebrate any achievements, big and small.

Look for areas to improve.

REFLECTION
We all know that the number 1 reason why people join your USANA business or buy from you is YOU! They buy YOU and that is the most important factor. After they buy YOU then they must have a vision to follow. But they must buy YOU first. My success in USANA is because many of my leaders bought ME when I met them. They saw the characteristics that I had and bought into me. My biggest lesson that I learned was when I first went to Malaysia. I was only a Silver Director and I was meeting all these “mlm leaders” who had years of experience in the industry. The first thing that I learned was that I had to be confident otherwise they would not buy me and not partner up with me. I was only a Silver! They could join other Super Star Diamonds instead of me! I was challenged and a little intimidated at first because I realized that they could join a Super Star Diamond instead of a “puny” Silver Director. It was then that I realized that I still had a chance and the most important factor was not the title nor experience but ME. I had to be confident and trustworthy. As long as I could demonstrate that, these leaders would buy into me. In the end, I was able to partner with many leaders and I believe the 2 most important qualities that allowed me to partner with them was my confidence and honesty.

This law also reminds me of a recent incident a few months back. There was this “leader” that had a great vision and would talk a lot… however, people did not buy into him. As a result, he would just talk and talk and no one would follow. Eventually, he disappeared due to frustration.

APPLICATION
Continue to develop my team and grow them as leaders. As they grow, more people will follow them. I have to refine the vision. Even if you people buy into YOU but you have no vision, then it is useless.

ACTION STEPS
Continue to develop myself, refine my vision and to grow my people. I am in charge of a leadership factory and the more leaders I produce, the greater my income will increase.

Reflection – In most of the corporate world, it is not uncommon that the Law of Empowerment is not or rarely practiced. People are afraid that their positions, authorities or power will be overtaken by others or subordinates if they teach everything they know to others or subordinates. People are afraid that they will be insecure and eventually they are no longer needed in the companies leading to the loss their jobs. This causes them to only teach 80% or 90% of whatever they know to the others and not 100%, just to make sure that they always needed in that particular positions or possess that particular authorities.

Application – In business world, on the other hand, emphasizes on the importance of empowerment to the others in order to achieve better. Empowerment to the others helps to get things done in a more efficient and effective manner. This also applies the same in network marketing, the leaders in the organization should train and empower the potential leaders to get more done. The leaders become more successful when there are more and more people in the organization are empowered and stepped up to take on more responsibilities. The more successful the downlines are, the more successful the leader is.

Action Steps – Train the potential leaders in the organization, and slowly empower them to take on smaller responsibilities, then to bigger responsibilities if appropriate.

My father-in-law has his own business. He violates the Law of Empowerment, because he is afraid of creating a competitors chain. He didn’t build up his workers, didn’t give them authorities or responsibilities. As a result, he has to do everything by himself, even at the age of 53 now.

Parents are the leader of the family. In Chinese culture, there are many Chinese parents do not empower or encourage their kids to do things. You can always hear “don’t do this, its very dangerous… don’t do that… no, this is not suitable for you… you will never do that…” This will seriously affect their capacity to achieve things, and discover their potentials.

APPLICATION – My Usana business is not just a selling vitamins business, it is a leadership business. I want to be successful as a leader in my Usana business; I have to be an empowerer. I have to BELIVE in my leaders. Empower my team members, build them up, give them resources, authority & responsibility and encourage them. By doing so, I believe they will feel more important in the team, and they are more confident in themselves and more energetic.

REFLECTION
I found this chapter to be the most fascinating especially where it talked about NFL head coaches! Being a big sports fan, I couldn’t believe that 50% of the NFL head coaches in 1998 were “descendants” from 2 coaches! As I run an similar test on NBA coaches, I found the same thing. I realized that this law makes sense because it is related to the Law of Inner Circle. If you are a great leader, you have obviously surrounded yourself with people who have tremendous potential. So it is natural for this Inner Circle to rise up and become the next generation of leaders.

APPLICATION
This makes it important to empower others. As I empower others and develop them into leaders, the new leaders will then develop even more leaders. This is the recipe for success in USANA. You need a Leadership Factory running full steam! I had a strong leader, Steve Swartz, mentor me. As a result, I have taken what I have learned to develop a next generation of leaders. For i.e. Ken Ong, John Goerlitz, Kim Koller, Raymond Tan, Amy Tan, Andy Chan, Devan, Scott McGee, Randy Ng, etc, etc, etc. My goal is to continue to develop new leaders.

ACTION STEPS
Continue to work on self development. As I grow personally, I will be able to teach better and also attract better leaders. Continue to work, train and mentor the next generation of leaders. As they grow, my business will grow.

A Leader’s Potential Is Determined by Those Closest to Him

REFLECTION – This chapter reminded me of ‘you are the average of 5 people that you always hang out with’. It really makes sense. If you want to be good in one area, mix around with people that are good in that area. After reading this chapter, I’ve learnt that there are no lone ranger leaders, and the power of teamwork, not just a team, but a team surrounded by good leaders; those who can raise the value in me and my organization.

APPLICATION – To grow my Usana business, I’ve to develop and grow my leaders too, help them to find their greatness. I’ve a team member, shes my future leader. She has lovely voice. I love to talk to her and her voice sounds very persuasive. She thought that shes not good in talking or selling, but I can see that shes good in that. So I’ve to help her to find this greatness in herself.

Do not bring weak people into my team. Work on myself, remember the Law Of Magnetism, attract stronger and better leaders. When I have the right people, my Usana business will skyrocket.

I know I have more potential that I haven’t yet reached, and if I want someday to get there, I’ve got to surround myself with the best people possible.

ACTION STEP
1.80/20 rule. Spend most of my time on these 5 types of people:

a.Those who raise up themselves

b.Those who raise morale in the organization

c.Those who raise up the leader

d.Those who raise up others

e.Those who raise up people who raise up other people

2.Join toastmaster club. (I know someone is shaking his head now, hahaha.. )

<!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

I. Reflection

A. If the inner circle is strong, the leader can accomplish great things, but if the inner circle is weak, he will be severely limited in his ability to make things happen. You need to surround yourself with people who meet these criteria:

Those who have a high influence over others

Those who have strengths in areas of your weaknesses

Those who hold a strategic position in the organization, without whom certain things in the organization will not function

Those who add value to you and the organization—if they don’t they will hinder your ability to lead well

Those who positively impact other inner circle members—inner circle members must function as a team and make each other better

They must display excellence, maturity and good character in everything they do—this is essential, but keep in mind not everyone who meets this criterion belongs in the inner circle

B. If you are just starting out, you will need to develop your inner circle:

Spend time to develop relationships and mentor them.

Give them extra responsibility and place higher expectations on them.

Give them more credit when things go well and hold them accountable when they don’t.

C. If you already have an inner circle, continually work to make it better. Divide them into three categories:

Those who get it almost immediately and they’re off and running with it—spend most of your time with this group

Those who are skeptical and not sure what to do with it—work to improve this group, or replace them if necessary

Those who start out negative and hope it will go away—replace these right away, don’t waste time with them

II. Application

A. I can see the Law of the Inner Circle playing out in our Usana leaders’ organizations. Their inner circle is extremely motivated, and from what I can tell, seem to meet the criteria above for the inner circle. They work well together and continually work to improve. Now while my team is small, in a way I consider the leaders as part of my inner circle. They are important in growing my business, adding strength in my areas of weakness, and as my team grows, I will be able to add to this inner circle, strengthening the whole team.

III. Action Step

A. I am training and developing myself as a leader, as well as training and developing my downline, watching to see how they mature, looking for leaders among them. As my team grows, I will be able to refine my inner circle.

I will work to “become the best leader I can be, then surround myself with the best leaders I can find.”–John Maxwell
